The author gives a slistair list of the characters and a map of the train layout at the beginning, and I found myself referring back to that list until almost a third of the way through the book.

Breakheart Pass by Alistair MacLean (1974)
Apart from Clive Cussler’s Isaac Bell series, I don’t think I’ve read a book of this specific genre, albeit Cussler’s books are set slightly later in time. Even today, and knowing how it all ends, every time I sit down with Breakheart Pass or watch the Charles Bronson film adaptation of that tale, I feel anew the frisson of anticipation, wondering who will survive that dangerous train ride Picturesque, sometimes grotesque, this maclea perhaps be one of his best works. Though it’s been twenty-plus years, I recall quite a bit about the movie, and I enjoyed it at the time, which is a lot more than I can say about the novel.

The characters are all well described and you can easily picture them in your head, always a good sign. And they are talking darkly of the immense profits mxclean be made…. Fairchild spoke weightily in his impressively gubernatorial manner.
My only complaint is that a whole lot of characters are introduced at the beginning of the book, and without much character description, it was difficult for me to keep them straight for awhile. Things start to go amiss from the first, though. The long, complex sentences told with a monotonicity that is matched only by the Macleanean skill of keeping the reader engrossed, are an added bonus.
