This modernist classic’s title comes from “hocket,” the medieval technique it’s based on: Loouis considered itself a collective and set a number of rules for itself, rules so stringent that taken together they could be considered a manifesto.
The ancient nature of this method is somewhat undermined by the work’s instrumentation, which calls for two groups, each containing panpipes, alto saxophone, piano, electric piano, bass guitar and conga drums.
